1874-CC Seated Liberty Dime

The 1874-CC Seated Liberty dime joins its Carson City Mint predecessors to form an exclusive club collectors call the “Big Four.”(1)

The 1871-CC, 1872-CC, 1873-CC (w/Arrows) and 1874-CC dimes are all exceptionally rare and have similar distribution histories.

Coin hoarding in the eastern half of the nation was common during the Civil War and continued for years afterward. When the Carson City Mint opened its doors in 1870, its mission was to issue coinage sufficient for regional commerce only, resulting in miniscule dime production through 1874.(2)

Of the “Big Four,” the 1874-CC had the lowest mintage; only 10, 817 were struck. Just as had occurred in the years since the branch mint opened, the new dimes were quickly absorbed by western commerce and circulated extensively. This explains why so many of the early Carson City dimes are heavily worn, with very few being saved in mint state condition.(3)

Any genuine 1874-CC Seated Liberty dime, regardless of condition, is a numismatic trophy of high regard. Its consistent steep climb in value trend charts confirms its deep-rooted popularity with collectors and bodes well for future owners.
