1872-CC Coronet $10 Eagle

Coins of all denominations struck during the first years of the Carson City Mint largely remained in the western regions of the United States. Most of those pieces experienced heavy wear and attrition from circulating fluidly in the channels of commerce.(1)

In 1872, the demand for $10 gold coins remained tepid, as depositors preferred the $20 denomination because they took half the time to count and held other advantages.

The mintage of the 1872-CC Coronet $10 eagle totaled a mere 4,600 pieces. Of that original population, only 83 examples of the 1872-CC are believed to exist today.(2)

Fascinating Fact: As mentioned, coins of the early Carson City Mint readily entered circulation and were workhorses in the economy. By the late 1930’s, when collecting branch mint eagles became popular, no 1872-CC eagles in Mint State condition were known. It was thought for the longest time none survived. This belief was shattered in recent years when an 1872-CC example in MS-62 condition emerged from a European collection. It sold for $240,000 in January 2020.(3)

The 1872-CC Coronet $10 eagle may not receive the same spotlight as other famous Carson rarities, such as the 1870-CC eagle. However, experienced dealers report the 1872-CC has one of the highest sell-through rates of any early “CC” coin, indicating on the seldom occasions when one hits the auction block, it almost always finds a new home after fierce bidding.(4)
